Crema Blog

Guest Post: The CREMA Roasterie

We were delighted when our friend, Chelsea Kallman, a Nashville based writer/photographer for Barista Magazine recently visited and blogged about her experience. She hang out with us while we cupped three different coffees and discussed our foray into roasting. Here’s what she had to say…

3rd Annual CREMA Christmas

UDPATE: The 3rd Annual CREMA Christmas, Dec 12th, raised $2,000 for Safe Haven and People Loving Nashville! Thank you!

This year’s holiday event once again will focus on serving the Nashville homeless community with coffee proceeds from the event going to Safe Haven and People Loving Nashville.

For the 2010 CREMA Christmas, local artisans have made homemade accessories (hats, scarves, gloves), and these items will be available for purchase for a homeless individual this holiday season.  Those that purchase a homemade item will be able to write a message to the homeless individual that will receive the gift. There will also be other “art” items available for sale: paintings, photos, jewelry and other handmade goods by local artists with proceeds going to each of these organizations.

In 2008-09, CREMA raised and/or donated nearly $3,000 to Safe Haven, the Contributor and other local charities. When the Nashville homeless community was displaced by the Nashville flood, the CREMA community quickly collected over three truckloads of supplies for immediate use by those displaced at tent city. Thank you for joining with us to make this a wonderful holiday season for the Nashville homeless.

About Safe Haven:
Safe Haven provides shelter and transitional services that empower Middle Tennessee homeless families with children to achieve lasting self-sufficiency. This is the only homeless shelter that takes in whole families in the area. For more information, http://www.safehaven.org.

About People Loving Nashville:
In 2008, a group of five gathered to provide a small Thanksgiving meal to those residing on the streets of downtown Nashville.  Impacted greatly by this one night, they decided to provide a weekly meal for the homeless & less fortunate in downtown. Now, coming together every Monday night to prepare, serve and give a meal, People Loving Nashville has become a movement among twenty-somethings and beyond in Nashville. The most important goal is to provide love, simple, genuine love to those that feel they have been forgotten. They are simply “People Loving Nashville.” For more information, http://peoplelovingnashville.com.

Spring – great coffees!

Spring is a great time for coffee! New shipments arrive monthly as each come in season. If you notice a little bit of change with your next espresso, or a brighter flavor from the Moka Harar, it’s because the crops are coming in season. If you’re in this week, ask us to take a whiff of the Lost Weekend (a blend of Harar and Sumatra), and note the bluberry-ish smell.

A new deck and this and that news

We’ve got a deck! Big thanks to Chris and Christian for doing one heck of a job.

You may not want to sit outside now but in a few weeks the deck will be a great place to sit and take in the city view.

In other news, we have a bunch of new ceramic mugs just in, new tumblers, new tshirts (not shown – new woman’s t’s too!) and have you tried the new Pistolas de Espresso? Exclusively roasted for CREMA by Drew Brews, check it out next time you’re in.

We’ve got a Bunn grinder for sale, interested? Let us know.

Have you had a CREMA Car Bomb yet?

No better title

Wow, what a title for a blog post, but couldn’t come up with anything better. It has been a while. We’ve been busy, like usual! But these days you’re most likely to catch us on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and oh, working on a our new espresso blend! Speaking of, we need a name for it, want to name it? It’s sweet, with dark chocolate notes and ripe blueberries. I can taste it now.

Geez, can anyone keep up anymore?

We’ve been busy. How does anyone keep up with Twitter, Facebook, myspace, yada yada yada….

Anyway, here’s some pix from our recent exploration on the west coast. We found an awesome little, only open a month, coffee shop on Post street. It’s called, Farm:Table, everything they serve is sourced locally and baked by them. So the next time you’re in San Francisco check ‘em out.

Barista Rocker: Reports from the Road (3rd report)

Our very own Barista, Logan, has taken to the road again with Roman Candle, a band that lives up to its name and will rock your socks off (what?). We are huge Roman Candle fans, isn’t everyone? Enough shameless rocker promotion and on to Logan’s third report from the road (first Barista Rocker report).

Des Moines. I used to pronounce it “dez moy nays” when I was a kid and then was shocked when I found out (sometime in middle school) that it wasn’t a city in Idaho. Probably shouldn’t be broadcasting this, but it’s the truth. We’re playing a place called the Vaudeville Mews tonight here. This is a great little club in a great town – at least as far as we’re concerned – the local paper here, “the register” named our first record the best of the year in 2002 when it came out. And since it was the only paper nationwide to do so, we feel like there must be some sort of connection between us and this place…

So right next door to the club is a cafe called Java Joe’s. This is a cafe/roaster that not only roasts the coffee they serve here, they also supply a number of other local cafe’s and restaurants. I didn’t actually get a chance to sample their espresso blend, but I did try both of their daily coffees (they offer a medium and a dark roast). Today the medium roast was Costa Rican and had a very rich, nutty and bright body to it with a great finish and a healthy acidity. The dark roast on the other hand (Kenya) was an earthy, smoky and woody cup with a a small amount of acidity and a lot of weight on the palette… the best thing about this place though might be the homemade ice cream and the “its a small world kid zone” which is full of toys and walls to scribble on.
